Mycobacterium tuberculosis es una bacteria aerobia estricta​ patógena responsable de la mayor cantidad de casos de tuberculosis en el mundo.​ Quien la descubrió por primera vez, el 24 de marzo de 1882, fue Robert Koch, a quien posteriormente se le otorgó el Premio Nobel de Fisiología o Medicina.
