Los pensamientos son plantas híbridas ornamentales, cultivadas por sus vistosas flores, obtenidas de la especie silvestre Viola tricolor; aunque a veces se la llama Viola tricolor hortensis, en rigor el nombre científico correcto para los híbridos es Viola × wittrockiana.
