El 23 de septiembre de 1948, un grupo se reunió en la Escuela de Lewis y Clark en Richland organizar un club de deportes al aire libre. Decidieron llamar a sí mismos temporalmente Las ratas del desierto Alpine Club. Más de 50 años después, ese mismo club con un nombre diferente, es todavía fuerte.
