Swissair inicialmente tenía más Boeing 747-257 en orden. Pero en lugar de recibir la entrega de estos aviones, Swissair, junto con otras aerolíneas, presionó a Boeing para que desarrollara una variante más moderna, con una cubierta superior estirada. Inicialmente planeado como B747-200 SUD (Upper Deck estirada) se convirtió en el B747-300 equipado con enignes y sistemas de navegación más nuevos y más económicos.
