El 7 abril de 1822 se libró en la falda occidental del Volcán Galeras, Nariño, Colombia, La Batalla de Bomboná, que fue dirigida tácticamente y de forma magistral por el "Libertador" Simón Bolívar, quien al mando 3000 soldados enfrentó al ejército realista compuesto por 2000 hombres, dirigido por el Coronel Basilo Antonio García y Velasco.
