Protea es el nombre botánico y el nombre común en castellano de un género de plantas florales. El nombre del género Protea fue creado en 1735 por Carlos Linneo en honor al dios griego Proteo que podía cambiar de forma a voluntad, dado que las proteas tienen muchas formas diferentes.
